A Dua for Election Time

Salam

With the impending elections in the UK there has been healthy discussion within the Muslim faith community about which political party is best placed to govern the UK, and in turn would be best for the Muslim community.

The various discussions got me thinking about a supplication (dua) of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) which he taught us regarding the leaders placed over us, and ultimately having complete trust in God in all of our matters.

Two wordings are specifically transmitted in hadith collections in this regard.

1. As part of a longer hadith we find the following words of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) which were taught as a supplication,

“…and give not power over us to anyone who will not have mercy on us.”

Wa la tusallit alayna man la yarhamuna

Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it grading it as a Hasan Sahih hadith.

2. A similar wording is also narrated which is,

“O Allah, because of our sins do not give authority over us anyone who will not have mercy on us”.

Allahumma la tusallit alayna bi dhunubina man la yarhamuna.

Imam al-Ajluni in Kashf al-Khafa and others state this is transmitted from earlier generations, but without specifically mentioning a source.

It is advisable that both supplications are used in the coming days and beyond. We also pray that whoever is best for the country and for the Muslim faith community is successful in the forthcoming elections. Amin.
